Following her stint on BBC One’s Pitch Battle singer-songwriter Becky Bowe has released a new single, That’s How Love Works. iSing’s Gemma Wilson-Vidal caught up with the 21-year-old from North Yorkshire.
How long have you been singing?
I started singing lessons when I was around 11 or 12. Before that I used to do the casual sing-song in the car or shower. I also played the keyboard from a young age. When I started to sing along to my playing, it set off this spark. At school I was always very into performing, but I trained every day to get better at singing. It never came naturally to me. I had to really work for it.
What’s it like being part of the Leeds Contemporary Singers?
Amazing. It’s great to sing alongside my close friends and be able to learn something new with harmonies and arrangements. We’re all musicians also, so we’re all on the same level.
We saw you on Pitch Battle. What did you learn from the experience?
It was truly incredible. I learnt that TV is very fast paced – you could never get bored. I also learnt that you’ve got to take every opportunity and give it your all. I feel like I enjoyed every single second which is something I’ve taken into my everyday life.
Have you got any tips for others wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Work hard, say “yes”, be reliable and look after yourself. Nothing comes easy and you’ve got to work to be the best you can. And look after yourself. You can’t do everything. Take time to relax.
How do you look after your voice?
I drink lots and lots of water all the time, steam, stretch my body and just try to keep myself healthy. I always make sure I warm up my voice and cool down afterwards.
Your latest single has made the UK charts. How do you feel about that and what’s next for you?
It was absolutely, blooming crazy to see my song in the charts. I only thought my mum and dad listened to my music! I was blown away. I appreciate every listener that enjoys my music; I couldn’t be more grateful for the support. Coming up next for me is another single and I’m excited about this one. It’s a nice progression from my recent single. It’ll be a couple of months yet but that’s what is next!
