7 tips to treat a hoarse voice

Every singer experiences vocal troubles — some minimal and some drastic — whether it’s from overuse (i.e. yelling at a concert) or sickness (we all come down with something eventually). A hoarse voice is a big worry for the singer, so knowing how to treat a hoarse voice is paramount.

So it’s a good idea to have a plan in place to help aid the healing of your vocal cords. You should know exactly how to treat a hoarse voice.

If you do get a hoarse voice, the first step is to, well, shut up. No, seriously — stop talking and singing and give your voice a break. Next, you should probably see a doctor as they’re the person who can give you medical advice (not us).

After that, you can look into home remedies. Here are just a few that many singers have found useful for beating a hoarse voice.

1. Ginger

This herb is a great way to help your shot voice. It’s soothing to the mucous membranes around your voice box and helps with inflammation. It also helps prevent infections in your upper respiratory tract.

You can get this in a number of different forms. You can put finely chopped ginger in hot water, making homemade ginger tea. You can even find ginger in gum form.

2. Honey

Honey is the go-to home remedy for a lot of singers. It coats and soothes your throat in a very tasty way.

Go for the raw, organic honey as that has the most nutrients to help your body heal. You can also put it in your hot tea, hot lemon toddy or just a glass of warm water.

3. Apple cider vinegar

ACV special characteristic is its antimicrobial properties, which help fight infections. It can also help ward off laryngitis, one of the most common reasons people get a hoarse voice.

Mix some ACV in your water and gargle that a few times a day.

4. Saltwater

Speaking of gargling, you could gargle some good old-fashioned salt water. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book for sore and scratchy throats.

Try mixing one teaspoon of salt in a warm glass of water and stir until it’s dissolved, then gargle away! Do this a few times a day.

5. Regular water

And speaking of water, drink lots of it! Water helps loosen any mucus in your throat and keeps your body hydrated, which in turn helps your body heal itself.

Try carrying a bottle of water with you wherever you go and keep refilling it. You’ll find you drink more than you normally do.

6. Steam

One common cause of a raspy throat is dryness. That’s why steam can help refresh your throat and respiratory area.

7. Rest

People forget how important sleep and rest are. Sleep is when your body and brain reset, refresh and rejuvenate. Sleep is something we should be getting plenty of regardless of our health, but when you have a hoarse voice, it’s especially important.

Go to bed on time, which might mean free up part of your daily schedule.
