BBC Sound of 2019 selects Flamenco influenced singer

Singer Rosalía, who is revolutionising the sound of Flamenco, has come in at number 5 on BBC Music’s Sound of 2019 list.

Rosalía Vila Tobella is a Catalan singer-songwriter who seamlessly fuses flamenco and R’n’B and lists Mozart, Kate Bush and Kanye West as influences.

The 25-year-old classically trained flamenco singer (her mentor is the renowned José Miguel Vizcaya) is already a star in her homeland, where music fans have found her ability to reinterpret authentic flamenco in a thoroughly modern way compelling.

And it seems the rest of the music world is quickly discovering the talents of the Barcelona-born artist. Her second album, El Mal Querer, released in November, won critical acclaim and two Latin Grammys. Here she is performing her hit single Malamente on Later…with Jools Holland.

The Sound of list recognises the most exciting new talent from around the world and is hotly anticipated in the music industry. It has a strong track record for picking future stars – previous winners include Adele, Sam Smith, Haim, Years & Years and Sigrid.

Every day this week the BBC will announce the name of one finalist with the big reveal of the overall winner taking place on Friday.

Other artists on the Sound of 2019 longlist are: Dermot Kennedy, Ella Mai, Flohio, Grace Carter, King Princess, Mahalia, Octavian, Sea Girls and Slowthai.

Our mission is to empower the singer through their voice, performance, health, understanding of the biz, and mindset so they can go out and create to their heart’s content.
